Only one camera setting actually matters: the USB connection mode. Set it to Remote Shooting (PC Remote), plug in, and the app finds your camera on its own. Everything else here just keeps the connection from dropping.
Before you start
- Put a memory card in the camera. Without one the camera won't enter remote shooting.
- Disconnect other camera apps. If Creators' App or Imaging Edge is connected, it holds the remote channel. Close them first.
- Use a data cable. Charge-only cables won't work. Lightning devices need Apple's camera adapter.
1. Set the USB connection mode
This is the one setting you must change, and it's behind almost every "can't connect".
MENU → Setup → USB → USB Connection Mode → Remote Shooting
The name differs by model. From our testing on six bodies: the α7 IV shows Remote Shooting, the α7 V shows PC Remote. Both are the same function — pick whichever your camera shows.
Do not pick Mass Storage or MTP. In those modes the camera behaves as a card reader, won't accept recipe writes, and the app will sit at "waiting for connection".
Unplug and replug after changing it. Switching the mode while the cable is attached doesn't take effect until you reconnect.
Every body needs its own setup. The setting lives in the camera, not the app. Some of the bodies we tested didn't ship in remote shooting mode.
2. Turn off auto power off
If the camera sleeps mid-write the connection drops and only part of the recipe lands.
MENU → Setup → Power Setting Option → Auto Power Off Temp. → High
MENU → Setup → Power Setting Option → Power Save Start Time → Off
You can set these back afterwards; neither affects shooting.
3. Connect and confirm
Plug the camera into your phone, open any recipe, and tap Send Recipe to Camera.
Once connected you'll see the model name, battery level, and how many Custom Look slots that body has — all read live from the camera. Seeing that screen means the channel is working.
First run asks for camera permission. iOS requires it for the app to talk to an external camera. No photos are taken and your library is never read. Declining blocks the connection.
If it won't connect
In order of how often we see it:
- Stuck on "waiting for cable" — nine times out of ten the USB mode is wrong. Recheck step 1, then unplug and replug.
- Camera detected but spinning — another app holds the remote channel. Quit Creators' App and reconnect.
- "This model doesn't support Creative Look import" — the body uses the older Creative Style, whose parameters don't map across.
- "Camera is busy" — it won't accept setting writes while recording, playing back, or writing to the card. Wait and retry.
- Write interrupted — parameters already sent stay on the camera, the rest are untouched. Reconnect and import again; repeating is safe.
Supported models
Your camera needs Creative Look. Bodies with the older Creative Style — the α7 III, α7C, α6400, ZV-E10, ZV-1 and their generation — have parameters that don't correspond, so they can't receive recipes. The camera menu is the authority: if it says Creative Look, it can.
Verified on the α7 V, α7 IV, α7C II, α7CR, α7R V and ZV-E1. Models not listed aren't necessarily unsupported — if your camera menu has Creative Look, just plug in and try. The app checks after reading the camera and tells you directly; when it isn't supported, nothing is written.
