Switching Creative Look From the Monitor — the One Tool That Changes the Camera

AlphaLuma··4分で読了

What It Does

In the AlphaLuma camera monitor you can switch Creative Look while watching the live view:

  • 12 built-in looks plus 6 custom slots, all on one panel
  • The setting is written into the camera, not simulated on the phone
  • The live view updates, so you judge the look on a full-size screen instead of a three-inch one
  • Collapse the panel and the toolbar keeps a badge showing which look is loaded
  • The slot list comes from what your camera reports, since different bodies expose different numbers of custom slots

This is a Pro feature.

Why This One Is Different From Everything Else in the Monitor

Grids, zebra, peaking, false color, scopes, safe frames, aspect masks, desqueeze, flip and rotate all live on your phone. Turn one off and the picture goes back to what it was. Nothing reaches the camera.

Three things in the monitor do reach it: the camera settings (ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, exposure compensation), the shutter button, and Creative Look. Creative Look is the one that changes how your files look. Tap a look and the live view changes because the camera changed — so the frame on your phone is the frame that lands on the card. Not a preview, not an approximation.

It is worth being blunt about this, because the two kinds of tools currently look the same in the app. There is no marker in the interface saying "this one writes to your camera". I know, and it is on my list — until then, this is the sentence to remember.

Why Doing It Here Beats Doing It in the Menu

On the body, changing Creative Look means entering the menu, finding the page, stepping through options, and backing out to see the result — three inches at a time, one look at a time.

On the panel they are all in front of you. Tap one, see the frame change at a size where you can actually judge colour, tap the next, compare. That is the entire reason I put it in the monitor instead of leaving it to the camera menu.

One Thing That Will Trip You Up

If Picture Profile is enabled on the camera, the whole Creative Look chain is locked out. That is Sony's rule, not mine. Turn Picture Profile off and looks become switchable again.

Better to know this now than while standing in a field wondering why tapping does nothing.

Recipes and Looks Are Related, but Not the Same

AlphaLuma can already import a full recipe over USB — every parameter of a look, written into a custom slot, ready to shoot. That is the deeper feature and it has its own post: One Tap from Phone to Camera.

What the monitor adds is the fast version: switching between looks the camera already holds, while watching a large live view, without leaving the frame. Set up your custom slots once with recipe import, then switch between them from the monitor for the rest of the shoot.

What You Need

iOS 16 or later, a Sony body with Creative Look in its menu and USB remote control enabled, and a data cable.

If a look does not take on your body, send me the model name — that is the piece of information that lets me fix it.
