Zebra, False Color, Histogram, Waveform: Four Ways to Not Trust Your Screen

What It Does

Four exposure tools in the AlphaLuma camera monitor:

  • Zebra stripes — diagonal stripes over anything brighter than your set range. Two presets (skin tone 70 plus or minus 5 IRE, clipping 98 to 100 IRE) plus a range you can drag yourself.
  • False color — the entire frame remapped by luminance, every level its own colour.
  • Histogram — brightness distribution across the whole image.
  • Waveform — brightness column by column, left to right across the frame.

Histogram and waveform are free. False color is a Pro feature.

Why All Four, Instead of Picking One

Because they answer different questions, and I kept needing the other one.

Shooting outdoors, the same thing happens to everyone: in bright sun the phone screen looks dim, so you push exposure up, and at home the sky is a flat white sheet with nothing in it. No amount of post work brings back detail that was never recorded. Screen brightness is not a measurement.

  • Zebra is local. It answers "is this specific patch blown". Point it at a face; when stripes just begin on the cheek, you are near correct exposure for skin. Keep the clipping preset on when shooting into the light — it marks only what is genuinely gone.
  • False color is global. It shows the whole distribution at once, which is what you want in scenes with extreme range: backlit landscapes, interiors with a window, sunsets. Not "is the sky gone" but "how much of this frame is still usable at this exposure".
  • Histogram is the summary. Piled against the left edge means underexposed; piled against the right means clipped.
  • Waveform tells you where. A waveform that climbs on the right means the right side of your frame is hotter — a histogram alone cannot show you that.

The Order I Read Them In

1. Waveform or histogram first. Set overall exposure. This is a global decision. 2. Zebra second. Find the specific areas that are gone, then decide whether you care. A blown specular highlight on water is fine. A blown face is not. 3. False color when the scene is difficult. Heavy backlight, big dynamic range, or anything you only get one take at.

They are not alternatives and they can all be on at once.

Why the Clipping Preset Is 98, Not 90

A wider clipping band is tempting — start warning at 90 IRE and you catch more. In practice it catches too much: areas that are bright but still hold plenty of detail get striped, the warning stops meaning anything, and you start ignoring it.

98 to 100 marks only what is genuinely gone — pure white with nothing left in it. A warning you trust is worth more than a warning that fires early. If you want the wider band anyway, drag the range yourself; that is what the custom range is for.

None of This Touches Your Files

All four are computed on your phone from the live view. They are not camera settings, they change nothing in the camera, and they never appear in the photos you shoot. Switch them off and the view returns to normal.
