I Built a Camera Monitor Into AlphaLuma

What It Does

AlphaLuma can now act as a field monitor for your Sony Alpha. Plug in a USB cable and the camera's live view appears on your phone, with this on top of it:

  • Composition grids — rule of thirds, center, diagonal
  • Zebra stripes — skin tone at 70 plus or minus 5 IRE, clipping at 98 to 100 IRE, or your own range
  • Focus peaking — three sensitivity levels, four outline colours
  • False color — the whole frame remapped by luminance
  • Histogram and waveform — the objective read on exposure
  • Safe frames — 90% action safe, 80% title safe
  • Aspect masks — 16:9, 2.39:1, 4:5, 1:1
  • Desqueeze — 1.25x, 1.33x, 1.5x, 2.0x for anamorphic glass
  • Flip and rotate — mirror horizontally, vertically or both; rotate in four steps
  • Portrait or landscape — switch the layout without physically turning the phone
  • Creative Look switching — 12 built-in looks plus 6 custom slots, written into the camera
  • Camera settings — ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, exposure compensation
  • Remote shutter — fire the camera from the phone, so nothing gets nudged
  • Connection readout — camera model, camera battery and phone battery, read live from the body

All of these can run at the same time. Grid plus zebra plus peaking is one screen that answers composition, exposure and focus together.

How to Use It

  • On the camera — set USB Connection Mode to PC Remote. Some bodies call it Remote Shooting.
  • Connect — a USB data cable from the camera to the phone. See What You Need below; the cable is where most people get stuck.
  • In AlphaLuma — open the app and tap the Camera Monitor card on the home screen. The live view appears on its own; there is no pairing step.
  • Turn the phone sideways. A 3:2 frame uses about a third of the screen height in portrait. Landscape is the point.
  • Tap a tool icon on the strip along the edge to open its panel, tap again to collapse it. The icon keeps a badge showing the current setting, so you can tell what is on without opening anything.

Menu paths per camera model and a full troubleshooting list are in the Help Center page Send Recipes to Your Sony Camera over USB. It was written for recipe import, but the connection half is identical — same USB mode, same cable requirements, same things that get in the way.

No Wi-Fi and no pairing anywhere in that flow. Requires iOS 16 or later.

Why I Built It

I make AlphaLuma on my own, and this one came out of my own shooting rather than a roadmap.

The screen on the back of the camera is three inches. Everything that is hard about shooting alone comes back to that: is the horizon level, did the sky blow out, is the manual lens actually sharp. I would squint, punch in to 100%, punch back out, lose the composition, and still find out at home that I got it wrong.

A dedicated field monitor solves this. It also costs money, needs its own battery, and adds an arm to the cage. Meanwhile there is a bright, high-resolution screen already in my pocket, and the camera will happily send it a live view over a cable. That gap is the whole feature.

Two Kinds of Tools, and the Difference Matters

Most of that list only changes what you see on the phone. Grids, safe frames, aspect masks, zebra, false color, peaking, scopes, desqueeze, flip, rotate, the portrait/landscape switch — switch any of them off and the view goes straight back. Nothing is written to the camera, and none of it appears in the files you shoot.

Three of them reach the camera. Pick a Creative Look and the setting is written into the body; the live view changes because the camera changed, which means the frame you are looking at is the frame that lands on the card. ISO, shutter speed, aperture, white balance and exposure compensation are sent to the camera the same way. And the shutter button really does fire the camera.

I am spelling this out because it is the one thing that causes real confusion. If you assume a grid gets baked into your photo, you lose nothing. If you assume Creative Look is only a phone-side preview, you will be surprised by what comes off the card.

The app does not currently mark this distinction in the interface. That is on my list.

Some Decisions You Might Disagree With

Peaking sensitivity is three steps, not a slider. Intermediate values between three usable settings do not mean anything in practice, and a slider invites fiddling instead of shooting.

Grid lines are white at 28% opacity, half a point wide. Heavier lines are easier to see and worse to use — a guide that competes with your picture is a guide you stop trusting.

Safe frames are white and unfilled, not yellow. Other tools use yellow. Yellow biases how you read colour in the frame, and "what you see is what you shoot" is the entire point of monitoring.

Colour temperature disappears in non-temperature white balance modes. It is hidden, not greyed out. In flash or underwater auto the concept does not exist, and leaving a dead control on screen only misleads.

What You Need

  • iOS 16 or later. The monitor uses APIs that are not on iOS 15, even though the rest of the app runs there.
  • A data cable. Charge-only cables are the number one reason nothing appears. iPhone 15 and later go USB-C to USB-C; iPhone 14 and earlier need Apple's Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.
  • A Sony body that supports USB remote control, with USB connection mode set to PC Remote.
  • Quit Creators' App or Imaging Edge first — they hold the remote channel and the camera will only talk to one of you.

There is no model whitelist for the live view itself — if your body does USB remote control, you get a picture. Creative Look switching is the part that varies: the app decides whether your camera can take a look by reading what the camera reports about itself, not by looking your model up in a table. Bodies built around the older Creative Style rather than Creative Look will show you a live view and everything else, but cannot switch looks.

What Is Not Done Yet

  • Photos stay on the camera card. You can fire the shutter from the phone, but the shot is not pulled back to your phone afterwards — that transfer path is built in the model and not yet wired up. For now the confirmation that a frame was taken is the haptic tap and the camera's own shutter sound.
  • No marker in the UI for "this tool writes to the camera." See above. It is the single most confusing thing about the feature right now and it is on my list.
  • LUT loading is not shipped. The panel exists in the code; the render path does not. I would rather ship nothing than a control that lights up and does nothing — especially one I intend to charge for.
  • False color and Creative Look switching are Pro features. Grids, scopes, flip, rotate and desqueeze are free.

Tell Me What Breaks
